"Keeping the Historic Memory"

The importance given to archives in order to preserve the history is growing in the current globalizing areas. Since computer science development, the repeated use of technologies for information and communication has supported other services with a scientific background. New management techniques as well as new studies on conservation and restoration have a major goal to improve the archival work.

The 18th Workshop about History and Archivology is being organized by the National Archive of the Republic of Cuba (ARNAC, by its Spanish acronym). This workshop aims to facilitate the knowledge sharing among specialists, technicians, and researchers from different social science areas. In addition, increasing the institutional cooperation in the field of archival work, conservation, restoration and historical studies will be another approach along with encouraging the use of information and communication technologies in the development of archival products.

The workshop will be dedicated to the National Day of Archivists, which is annually celebrated every 3rd day of November.

Professionals and technicians from different institutions whose missions are focused on management, conservation, restoration, investigation and promotion of the documental patrimony.

Scientific Program

The workshop will be supported by conferences, roundtables, panels and oral presentations.


  • Archives. Organization, problems and perspectives of institutional systems of archives.
  • Experiences in the documentary field.
  • Archival services and information access. Issues and challenges.
  • The archives using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
  • Management of cultural promotion in the archives.
  • Experience of international collaboration in archives.
  • Experience in the legal protection of archives.
  • Management processes applied to archives.

Preventive Conservation and Restoration

  • Environmental quality of storages and conservation of collections.
  • Biodeterioration of documentary support and its control.
  • Diagnosis of collection states and documentaries.
  • Rescue of damaged collections under disaster situations.
  • Restoring patrimonial documents.
  • Restoring valuable bindings.
  • Storage fitting to guarantee a proper conservation of collections.

The use of documentary sources for studying the history

  • The conspiratorial process and the independence of Americas and its ties with Cuba.
  • Cuban Independence riots.
  • Slavery and its legacies.
  • The Neocolonial Republic.
  • The Cuban thought.
  • The Cuban Revolution, influence on the development of society and its impact on Latin America.


  1. Open to all citizens and international professionals interested in oral presentation or regular attendance.

  2. All works must be related to the use of documentary sources in archives.

  3. Oral presentations must be submitted by e-mail before June 30th, 2014; and must include the following information:

    • Title and Author(s).
    • Summary (250 words maximum, written in 'Arial' with single line spacing).
  4. Only one person can attend on behalf of a research group. Participants must provide the following information:

    • Full Name.
    • Identity Number.
    • Institution (name, address and contact information).
  5. Oral presentations must last 15 minutes. Afterwards, 10 minutes will be given for questions. A certificate will be issued for all participants.

  6. The Academic Committee will reward the best works. Having until July 31st, 2014 to notify the authors about the acceptance of their works. Submissions should be sent to:

  7. The authors of accepted papers will have until September 30th, 2014 to submit full papers to be included in the memories of the event and must meet the following requirements:

    • Must not exceed the 20 pages in 'Arial' or 'Times New Roman', size 12 and 1.5 line space.
    • The document format should be set to "Letter".
    • Figures and tables should be placed at the end of the document after the Bibliography.
    • The document must be submitted in format compatible with Microsoft Word.

Registration Fees

  • $ 50.00 CUP for Cuban citizens.
  • $ 50.00 CUC for internationals, Cubans living abroad or internationals with permanent residence in Cuba.

Payments must be addressed directly at the National Archive in Havana.
